The Announcement
In our New Year hiking ritual, we plan to scale the high places, face into the wind, and shout to the dying light. We will curse the ill fates, the bad fortune, and the evil in the world. We will make a mighty din, and reaffirm our acceptance of the brief gift of life we have. We will rail against entropy and all those that would destroy what we build. We will reaffirm our friendship, and praise all that is good in the world.

It looks like the weather should be good for New Year's. So, a hike is planned. We'll leave hear at 1:15 in order to begin a hike at about 2:00 at Montebello Ridge OSP. This will be just out to the high places and back, at an easy pace, with appropriate cursing along the way.
The Hike
It was a good day for beasty-watching. We saw coyotes right from the start, and only saw more as the hike progressed. Deer were practically a nuisance as well. Hawks hung just out of reach on trees and power line towers. Many of us lost loved ones this last year, and at the site of the bones of the dragon spine at the peak of Black Mountain, we let out a might roar. Mighty enough that we pretty much cleared the area of all people and wildlife. It was a good way to start the year.
Kathy couldn't join us at the start of the hike, but arrived 20 minutes late and caught up with us 20 minutes later. She did in 20 minutes what we took 40 minutes to do. And Robin showed us some of her hidden musical talents in the car trip up -- you just had to be there.
