November 9, 2008 Sunol Regional Wilderness

Wimble Scale: Difficult, Length: 6.1 miles, Climb: 1700 feet, Time: 4 hours

The announcement
This Sunday, we leave here at 9 for Sunol. Expect this to be a hard hike, though we may moderate it, depending on how everyone feels. The hard option is likely to be up to Cave Rocks then over the crest to Eagle Peak and down to Little Yosemite. If we’re not so ambitious, we’ll just go up McCorkle and down to Little Yosemite. Plan on 3 to 4 hours of hiking, mostly exposed with a fair amount of vertical elevation, a bit over a thousand feet is likely. We’ll have lunch along the way.

The hike
It was a long piece of walking at Sunol. About half way up the Indian Joe Trail, we began debating the many trail options once we got past Cave Rocks. After lunch at the rocks, we did the short, steep climb up to the trail intersection and continued the debate. And continued. And continued. Until Donna (The Enforcer) said, “Let’s just go”.

She was facing up towards Eagle Peak when she said this, so I just assumed that’s the way she wanted to go. And we went. Up. And up. And up some more. “I didn’t mean we needed to go this way,” she said, as we neared the summit.

You know, she could have told us that at the bottom of the trail and none of us would have complained.
