Wimble Scale: Difficult, Length: 6.6 miles, Climb: 1334 feet, Time: 3.5 hours

The announcement
This week we have a choice hike. We’ll start with a section of hike that almost no one in FOMFOK has taken. Half way through the hike, we’ll make a choice of a moderate hike or hard hike.

We leave here at 9 for Rancho Canada Del Oro, with the funny worm over the ‘n’ so it’s not actually a drive north to Canada but a drive south. A mile or two south of the Calero Reservoir.

We start with a pleasant, covered, gradual climb until we come to the picnic table in the middle of nowhere. Then it’s down along a creek bed until we come to the choice point. From there we can climb to Bald Mountain, which is a piece up in the air and pretty much all exposed, or we can continue down the stream for a shorter loop.

Plan on 2 to 2.5 hours for the short loop, and another hour if we do the bigger loop. We’ll have lunch on the trail but, as usual, we’re open to the possibility of a post-hikical imbibement afterwards.

The hike
t was a fairly big crowd that showed up last weekend. At the first chance, we split up into two groups. Let’s call them the Enlightened and the “Mike probably didn’t mean it”, for lack of a better name. The Enlightened took the lesser climb, passing wildflowers still clinging to the unusually dry soil, and headed up to the “picnic table in the middle of nowhere” where Grey used his telephoto lens to give us a blow by blow account of the other group skywalking the other ridge.

The other group didn’t walk much than us further horizontally, but climbed a bit more than us as they headed for old Baldy. They probably think they’re getting conditioned for the Challenge Hike coming up, but nothing will condition you for it. The purpose of the Challenge Hike is to break the likes of Donna, Kristen, Beth, Peggy, Judy, Ron, …, well, you know who you are. It’s coming soon, I think. No need to drag out the fear and trepidation of the event. It’s just a matter of whether it will occur before or after the upcoming FOMFOK party.
