January 13, 2008 Sunol Regional Wilderness

Wimble Scale: Moderate, Length: 4 miles, Climb: 1000 feet, Time: 2.5 hours

The announcement
This Sunday, we’re hiking Sunol. I’m thinking we’ll do a moderate hike, mostly exposed. We’ll go up the McCorkle Trail, up past the buzzard roost, then down to the stream at Little Yosemite, where we’ll stop for lunch at the picnic table. From here we’ll try to mostly follow the stream back.

We leave here at 9 and begin the hike about 9:45. Plan on about 3 hours of hiking. A few sections of the trail may be a bit slippery and muddy.

We have one more hike before my surgery and I want to be in as good shape as I can before then. So the week after will probably be an upper-end moderate hike, perhaps even Uvas, if it seems like the water might be running. Keep in mind that if it snows, we do an emergency, short-notice hike at Castle Rock.

The hike
What a great start to the new year, hiking at Sunol. It turned out to be much harder for me that I remembered, though, suggesting I’ve been putting too many miles on the couch and not enough on the mountains. Rather than trying to get all of those miles back in one hike, though, we’ll try to inch our way back up to fitness. Well, except for me personally, but you already know why I’m about to miss a few hikes.
