It was a cold day in the city. The fog hung on you like a cheap sweater from the local church rummage sale. The City was all quiet like, like a CEO before a senate hearing. That is, until "they" showed up.

The were polished dames. Polished right down to their manicured toe nails. And they were here to do a job. They tried to look like tourists, but tourists don't keep their back to you and walk backwards down the stairs.

The one with the white hair had her coat ready to muffle your screams as she strangled you, if you got in her way. And her way was heading right towards me. The rest of the dames made the delivery while the white haired one chased after me like I was pig that showed up at the barn dance.

She threw me in the bushes like an empty beer can on the drive home. They were good. They were real good. They walked by while they were splitting the haul and laughed at me like all those parents when I split my pants during the Junior High School Christmas Pagent.

When the cops found me, it was too late. They were always too late. All they could do now was to put out a dragnet over the City. That cold City with a heart like an alley cat.
