Sunday, February 2, 2003 Uvas Canyon

Rating:

Wimble Scale: Moderate, Length: 4 miles, Climb: 1000 feet, Time: 2.5 hours

The Announcement

It's Uvas Canyon again - time for some waterfall viewing. Check out the web site for photos and descriptions of previous hikes.

This is a moderate hike. We climb a stream, viewing cascade after cascade, and take a few side trips for the spectacular falls. Bring a snack if you'd like, but I suspect Kathy and I will have lunch in Morgan Hill afterwards. Bring at least one large water bottle - two might be better. The trails are usually well maintained, but poison oak might be encroaching on the trail in places this early in the year. Bring gloves and a jacket - it can get mighty chilly up there this time of year. Bring hiking shoes - sneakers are definitely dangerous around the water crossing. If you bring a camera, you'll probably have at least 3 or 4 big waterfalls to take pictures of, and lots of little ones.

We leave here at 9, and begin the hike a few minutes before 10. Plan on 2.5 to 3 hours of hiking. I'm not feeling well at the moment, but I still plan to hike, though maybe only part way.

The Hike

There was an interesting sight when we finished this hike. As we were leaving the parking lot and passing the entrance gate which had a "Do not enter here - severe tire damage" kind of sign at the exit lane to the park, there was an SUV sitting just inside the park. It had come in using that lane, possibly thinking to avoid the parking fee, or maybe they were just used to driving on the wrong side of the road. A tow truck was just arriving to pick up the vehicle with its four shredded tires.
